Local sporting heroes had their success brought into the spotlight at the third annual City of Mandurah Sports Awards gala dinner last night.
Around 150 people attended the event last night at Rushton Park Sports Facility, with elite powerlifter Nang Nguyen getting the gong as Mandurah’s Sports Person of the Year.
Nguyen represented Australia in powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games this year, where he finished eighth and is currently ranked seventh in the world in the 59kg class.
He is also ranked first in Australia in the 59kg class and second in Australia in the mixed class.
The local star has been undefeated in nationals as a light weightlifter for four years, and was one of nine awards winners on the night.
Oswald Igel got the nod as the Senior Sports Person of the Year, while Damien Burrage’s outstanding cricket exploits landed him the Junior Sports Person of the Year title.
Volunteers Ian Robinson and Joanne Hawes were honoured for their service to their respective fields, while the North Mandurah Junior Football Club (club of the year), Mandurah Magic women (team of the year) and Peel Thunderbirds Youth Girls (junior team of the year) were also awarded.
Meanwhile Jim Davis was presented the Sports Person with a Disability of the Year.
Fremantle Dockers star Hayden Ballantyne made an appearance at the awards, which recognise those who have made a significant contribution to Mandurah’s sport scene.
