Levi Muller’s superb outing with the bat lifted Halls Head to a victory over the Hillman Hornets in the A-grade leg of the Retravision Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Muller was in terrific touch at Peelwood Reserve, blasting 81 runs from 109 deliveries and finding the boundary eight times as the opener saw the home side heat up early after electing to bat first.
The squad was off to a promising start before fellow opener Michael Chappell (16) was caught off a Vysakh Menon ball, but Craig Ford (15) paired with Muller to see the hosts to 2/78 before he was ousted.
The wickets of Chris Phelps (11) and Elliott Foote (0) gave Hillman’s bowlers the chance to gain control of the contest, but hearty contributions from Dustin Robinson (24) and Michael Griffiths (34 not out) helped Halls Head see out their 50 overs for a score of 7/227.
The total loomed as a tall order for the Hornets to chase, but Mitchell Hind put in an outstanding performance with the bat to give his side hope.
Wasting no time Hind blasted his way to an astonishing 72 runs from 38 deliveries, finding the boundary 14 times including five of those going for six.
His blistering speed gathering runs saw Hillman race to the 100 mark, but Dale Burns was able to conjure his only wicket for the day at a crucial time to send Hind back to the stands.
From there the Hornets lost momentum with Kyle Jeffrey (3/19) impressing with the ball for Halls Head.
His efforts helped send the Hornets home with a total of 202, not enough to garner a win.
Halls Head now sit just shy of a top-four berth with a 3-3 record through six games, while Hillman remain winless.
Mandurah def. Warnbro Swans
Mandurah’s pristine start to the season continued as they made it six straight wins with a resounding victory over Warnbro.
Sending the Swans into bat first Mandurah put them to the sword with strong bowling from Ian Lattimore (2/10), Lewis Binns (2/11) and Sach In (3/26), dismissing Warnbro on 122.
They would go on to chase that total down losing just one wicket, as Ben Drummond (46) and Jordan Bell (54) both went unbeaten to close out the win.
Mandurah has now lost just one wicket in the past two weeks and sits pretty atop the table.
White Knights Baldivis def. Pinjarra
Stringent bowling helped the White Knights overcome Pinjarra in round six, with Stefan Botha and Kyle Ralph helping Baldivis defend their 179-run total.
Wesley Steele’s 34 top-scored as Baldivis opened with the bat, but the Tigers would have been feeling good after stemming the flow of runs to keep the target within reach.
But Botha took 2/7 off 6.1 overs (three of which were maidens) while Ralph’s 2/9 kept the pressure on Pinjarra, giving them no room to score as they were all out on 154 runs (28 of which came as extras).
The win moves Baldivis into second place on the ladder.
Shoalwater Bay def. South Mandurah
Dudley Cortland was on fire for Shoalwater in a win over Souths, taking a hat-trick on his way to the figures of 5/20 as he dismantled the Falcons’ order.
Cortland cleaned up the middle order and also took the important wicket of Matt Hill (39 runs) which sparked a collapse in Souths’ line-up, as they were dismissed on 128 runs from 37 overs.
His huge day continued with the bat as he notched 36 runs from 38 deliveries, helping the Seals to an emphatic win as they hunted down the total finishing 3/134 from 24.5 overs.
The win is Shoalwater’s third on the year and keeps them in fifth spot.
Waroona def. Singleton
Waroona came away with a victory in a nail-biting grand final rematch against the Irwinians on Saturday, as they held off a gallant Singleton outfit that fell just three runs shy of the needed total.
Batting first, Matt Thomas’ team-high of 34 helped Waroona put up a slim 145 runs before being all out in the 41st over.
But Singleton failed to capitalise on their strong bowling as they fell agonisingly short of the required score.
Brendan Gillian piled up a healthy 41 runs but the Irwinians ended the day on 9/142, just one boundary shy of a win.
