Mandurah boxer Tyler Naidoo handed local gym Fighter Fit Boxing their first ever victory in the ring while kicking off his career in style with a stunning win in the opening round of the WA State Novice Titles in Leederville on Saturday night.
The 21-year-old boasts a pristine 1-0 record after taking care of business with a knockout win in the opening 25 seconds of the match, bolstering his claim to the state title as he now prepares to enter the quarter finals of the competition this coming weekend.
It proved an impressive debut bout for the young fighter, who had been in training with local Mandurah legend and former Australian champion Danny Heyes for a shade more than a year before entering the ring.
Heyes opened his new gym on Park Road earlier this year, with Naidoo the first of their fighters to step into the ring competitively and the first to notch a victory for the gym.
The young welterweight said he was rapt to deliver a win for the gym, but was adamant he would move on quickly to prepare for his bout in the quarter finals.
“I was stoked to get the win – I just tried to follow everything we’d trained on in the lead-up and luckily I managed to land a few good punches and come away with it,” he said.
“It’s definitely a really good feeling to have that first fight out of the way, but there’s not much time between that and the quarters so now we’re just all about preparing for that.
“Hopefully we can keep pushing and we’ll see how far we can go.”
Naidoo’s victory proved a proud one for Heyes, who was ecstatic with the young gun’s performance.
“I can’t speak highly enough of how he went about the fight,” Heyes said.
“Some fighters train and go through all the preparation and then forget it when they get in the ring, but he stuck to everything we’d been doing in the gym and it’s done us all proud.
“We see how hard he works when he’s here – he trains the house down – so for him to bring home our gym’s first ever win, we’re just stoked for him.”
Naidoo will head into his quarter finals bout this weekend hoping to secure a spot in the semi finals.
