An additional magistrate is visiting the Mandurah Magistrates Court in response to the large backlog of cases clogging the system.
Resident Mandurah Magistrate Anne Longden was welcomed by another magistrate at the end of June, who is running an extra court one week every month.
A Department of Justice media spokeswoman said the appointment was to “assist with the ongoing resolution of a backlog of cases”.
The spokeswoman said the visiting magistrate was not always the same person.
She said the backlog had since improved.
“The listing interval as at the end of June, 2018, was 43 weeks and at the end of September, 2018, it had reduced to 32 weeks,” the spokeswoman said.
“It is expected that with the extra support the listing interval will continue to decrease over time.”
