Pinjarra is one step closer to establishing a “desperately needed” Men’s Shed, with the Shire of Murray pledging to work with a local group of seniors to find a suitable site for the facility to be constructed.
The modern Men’s Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of Australian culture, with hundreds of groups meeting to socialise and take part in projects.
The importance of spending time with their peers has been highlighted as a major positive in relation to mental health and avoid social seclusion.
A Pinjarra group has been formed and they have asked the Shire to help them formalise a Men’s Shed locally.
Steering committee chairman Rob Hodgkinson said the project would be a major community asset.
“This project is desperately needed and the senior community members know it’s long overdue,” he said.
“This committee has come to a conclusion that ensures the community reaches a goal quickly and in a viable environment.
“The committee considers that two sheds must occur, but to begin with a shed that can accommodate woodwork and storage for development.
“We consider that shed two will only occur once we have a viable shed up and running and a steady membership.
“This strategy will ensure that any funding for the stage one shed is not creating a white elephant and becomes a community proud project.
“We have pledges from volunteers with trades who will support this, thus ensuring we save thousands of dollars in consultancy fees.
“This willingness by the community is overwhelming to date, but could easily go to stagnation if a sector drags its feet. We need genuine help and support from our elected members, the Shire and also our volunteer groups.
“This comment is not a swipe at anyone, it is a reality, and stated from involvement and experience in other community projects.”

Shire of Murray chief executive Dean Unsworth chief executive said the council backed the idea.
“The Shire of Murray is actively working in partnership with the recently established Pinjarra Community Men’s Shed and other local stakeholders to identify a site with capacity to accommodate a Men’s Shed concept,” he said.
“Once a suitable site is formally identified, secured and approved by council, work will commence in partnership with the group to develop working plans and explore funding opportunities that may be available to bring this worthwhile project to fruition.
“The group comprises passionate, dedicated community members, who have taken a proactive step in encouraging mateship and supporting the health and well-being of residents in our community. The Shire congratulates the group on their efforts.”
