In a welcome surprise for local seniors, The Spirit of the Street Choir is set to perform at the Mandurah Seniors and Community Centre on October 3.
The Spirit of the Street Choir are no strangers to Mandurah, having performed at the Entertainment Centre for the Proms, the Stretch Festival, and have made numerous appearances at Lesley Street Community Centre.
The choir have become a Perth institution by giving voice to the vulnerable and marginalised in our community, being openly inclusive to all comers, and creating a family atmosphere through singing and performing.
They are founded and led by popular songwriter and entertainer Bernard Carney, and in 2018 are singing into their eleventh year. They have performed four times at the Perth Concert Hall, many times at the Perth Town Hall and St Georges Cathedral, as well as regional festivals such as Fairbridge, Nanga and the Voice festivals at Denmark and Dunsborough. They are indeed a busy choir.
Signing in this choir is a healing journey for many of its members, and their songs are an uplifting mix of popular genres with some original material interwoven.
A heart warming element of any performance is when choir members introduce songs and share glimpses into their own lives and the challenges they face on a daily basis. This resonates with audiences from all levels of the community, often resulting in standing ovations and calls for encores.
The Spirit of the Street Choir are all about spreading joy, and are inviting you to share their infectious singing energy in October at the Mandurah Seniors and Community Centre.
I have organised several concerts in the past for The Spirit of the Streets Choir, and they have been amazing each time. Bernard Carney directs the performance and always plays his guitar with charisma and flair.
The performance runs from 1:15pm to 2:45pm, with tea and coffee to follow.
People of all ages are welcome to attend, and if you’d like any more information, please call Bethany at the Mandurah Seniors Centre on 95503799.
