One of South Mandurah or Pinjarra will carve their names into the Peel Football and Netball League history books as the first ever club to take home a women’s premiership when they clash at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday.
Going head-to-head in the first ever PFNL Women’s grand final, the two clubs head into the game deserving of their positions after forming the competition’s top two for the majority of the year.
The Tigers made their way to the groundbreaking game when they disposed of Baldivis in a preliminary final over the weekend.
Pinjarra was emphatic in the 6.3 (39) to 0.2 (2) win, keeping Baldivis goalless as they stormed into the premiership game.
Meanwhile the Falcons booked the early ticket to the grand final when they toppled Pinjarra in the qualifying round a fortnight ago, earning themselves a week off in the process.
Thanks to that win, in which they kept the Tigers goalless, South Mandurah heads into the game as hot favourites to take home the flag.
But coach Sol Daw said his group’s focus is firmly fixed on the task at hand.
“Obviously it’s really exciting for us to be part of the first women’s grand final but we just need to treat it like any other game,” he said.
“We’re thrilled to be there, but we have a job to do.”
Daw said the group would look to continue the form that saw them into the grand final.
“The approach is pretty simple, be accountable and be committed,” he said.
“We just need to win the ball, make sure we use it well, run hard and the rest will take care of itself.”
The Falcons boast a strong spread of talent across the board spearheaded by MVP runner-up Brianna Moyes, while the likes of April McPherson, Stacey Teariki, Jessica Hunnam and Kasey Edwards have been in strong form.
Meanwhile Pinjarra will look to counter that with their own star power consisting of dual MVP winners Jesse Salter and Kate Beswick, along with joint runner-up Courtney Fabry.
Jena Daniel also put in a terrific performance to help Pinjarra over the line in their preliminary final.
The inaugural women’s grand final kicks off at 2.15pm, being played in between the reserves and league games.
