Victorian golfer Kyle Michel topped a field of more than 120 eager competitors to take out this year’s Steelscene Mandurah Amateur at the Mandurah Country Club this week.
The Shepparton Golf Club member was superb on our local fairways, finishing at seven-under and winning after an exciting sudden death two-hole playoff against Golf South Australia representative Jack Thompson from The Grange Golf Club.
“I am pretty pumped about that win,” Michel said.
“I didn’t really expect anything with nine holes to go. I was a few shots back, but made a couple of putts coming in and was able to get to a play-off and then the win.”
The Mandurah club hosted its local and interstate representatives across the four-day event, a 72-hole national ranking tournament.
Cooper Geddes produced the best result of the local golfers, finishing fourth overall while boasting the tournament’s equal low round of six under 65.
This year’s event also proved to be a groundbreaking one with Mandurah’s Kathryn Norris becoming the first ever woman to compete in the male tournament.
Norris took to the greens on a sponsor’s invite thanks to Steelscene, and showed her prowess as one of the country’s top up and coming female prospects with a stunning showing.
The promising star sat in the top 20 ahead of more than 100 male opponents for much of the tournament, before ending with an impressive top 40 result.
“It was a great experience,” Norris claimed.
“I think playing with men and off the back tees certainly brings out your best golf, purely because you’re focusing on playing the course.
“I knew I had to play really well to make a good score. I hit some good shots and managed to do that which was great.”
