Mandurah Catholic College (MCC) youngsters have once again proved themselves to be some of the best junior surfers and bodyboarders in the state after the school finished second overall at the state final of the SunSmart WA School Surfing Titles at Trigg Beach last Friday.
A handful of MCC competitors took out top-two finishes at the event, spurring the college to the runner-up podium position behind only Margaret River Senior High School, who took out their 13th consecutive win.
Bodyboarders Kael McGowan and Dylan O’Brien were some of MCC’s brightest young stars, taking out first in the junior boys division, while Tom Mainwaring and Henry Gibson ended their senior boys campaign in second place.
April McPherson and Ella Golding helped continue the run of strong results when they took out the runners-up title in the senior girls surfing category.
The state final brought together the best performing schools who qualified through 10 regional and metro qualifying events over the past two weeks.
Over 100 students from Geraldton, Esperance and everywhere in between represented their high school with great gusto in an event series that promotes surf and bodyboard participation in the modern curriculum.
A total of 49 regional and metropolitan high schools and a staggering 346 teams took part in the event series, making it Surfing WA’s largest participation based event of the year.
“The SunSmart School Surfing Titles epitomises WA’s junior development and competition pathway,” Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks said.
“Students can reach the Australian Junior Surfing Titles after first completing learn to surf courses through their school, competing at regional and metropolitan qualifying events, then performing here at the state final.
“I wish all our national titles representatives all the very best for South Australia.”
