Year 10 Students from Foundation Christian College headed down to the Mandurah Forum recently to offer shoppers a helping hand.
The willing volunteers were available to help shoppers take their shopping to the car or hand out baskets and trolleys as patrons entered the centre.
The initiative follows the “Less of Me and More of You” theme, adding to the students’ 21 Acts of Service for 2018.
College principal Andrew Newhouse said he was proud of the students due to the way they worked together to assist members of the community.
“Feedback was that people were very surprised at being approached but once they realised that the students were genuine in their offer to assist, with no strings attached, the centre visitors were very grateful,” he said.
“On a particularly quiet morning, students took the initiative to help a storekeeper stack their shelves. Even though they were only at the store for a short amount of time, the positive impact made on those people they served as well as the students themselves is tremendous.”
Teacher Mandi Mouton said the after-effect this lesson has had on the students had been interesting.
“I can see that the students are much more aware of people around them and concerned with how they can help out – tt is something very special to see,” she said.
The next acts of service will include helping, visiting and spending time with the elderly at a local retirement village, cleaning the Middle School and accepting an invitation to assist at the Cohunu Koala Park in Byford.
