PFNL 2018: Holmes closes in on century with eight-goal bag in win over Mandurah

Brad Holmes continued to close in on the 100-goal mark when he bagged eight majors in South Mandurah’s 95-point win over cross-town rivals Mandurah on Sunday.

The Falcons put a slow first quarter behind them to keep their hot form alive storming to a 20.19 (139) to 6.8 (44) win at Bendigo Bank Stadium, with Holmes’ haul of eight moving him to 91 for the season with one game remaining.

Both he and teammate Sam Evans carried the form that saw the pair snag seven goals apiece last week into the Mandurah match-up, as the latter nailed five to go with the key forward’s eight.

The duo were the only Falcons goal-scorers in what could be deemed a steady first quarter for the visitors, as they kept the Mustangs goalless but only went into the first break leading by 13 points.

But from there it didn’t take long for the Falcons to find the form that saw them smash Halls Head last week, as they piled up seven goals to Mandurah’s two in the second term to take a commanding 46-point lead into the long break.

Aaron Zucconi booted all three of his goals in the second, while Evans jailed his third and fourth to ensure the Falcons would remain on a roll coming out of half time.

By the end of the third Souths led by a whopping 73 points, with Holmes nailing a trio of goals in the final quarter to breach the 90s.

Goals to Stuart Puls and Blayne Hull saw Mandurah snare a pair back in the final stretch, but best-on-ground Jack Shanahan joined the scoring to help the away side finish off strong.

Holmes will need a big day out if he is to crack 100 goals on the regular season next week, with South Mandurah hosting a Baldivis outfit desperate to bounce back from their disastrous loss in a top-two clash with Pinjarra on Saturday.

The spearhead booted 10 last time the Falcons hosted the Brumbies.

Meanwhile Mandurah end their season with the toughest test of all, facing a Pinjarra squad looking to sure up their credentials as the minor premiers.
