Mandurah’s local sports stars and volunteer sporting heroes will have their contributions to the community brought into the spotlight once again at the 2018 Mandurah Sports Awards, with nominations now open.
The awards, now in their fourth year, honour the individual, team and volunteer efforts of the city’s finest sportspeople.
The nomination period covers all sporting activity and achievements from October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2018 with entries set to close on Friday, October 5.
Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams encouraged the community to get behind its sporting heroes and make sure they get the recognition they deserve.
“[This year] was a big year for Mandurah sport with numerous local sides tasting success and flying the flag in final fixtures. There were also some outstanding individual sporting achievements and these awards are designed to recognise such impressive feats,” he said.
“I encourage the community to take the time to submit a nomination so we can continue to grow sport in our region while celebrating the accomplishments of local sportspeople, volunteers, teams and clubs.
“Sport and recreation is about competition but it is also about helping create a stronger, healthier, happier and safer community.
“This is why I am particularly excited about seeing who will win the volunteer awards – volunteers are the glue that hold our community together, and grassroots sporting clubs provide a perfect context for people to contribute to a better community.”
Last year’s awards saw Mandurah Magic basketball legend Casey Mihovilovich take out the sportsperson of the year title, while Peel Thunder premiership player Rory O’Brien became the inaugural inductee into the City of Mandurah Sporting Hall of Fame.
Among the awards, is the Ken Phillips Male Volunteer of the Year award which was launched in 2017 as a tribute to Ken Phillip as the first winner of the Male Volunteer Award in 2015.
If you know a talented local sportsperson who has been raising the bar at state, national or international level, they can be nominated.
Importantly, if your club is lucky enough to have a dedicated volunteer stalwart deserving of widespread recognition, they can also be in the mix for an award.
