An arts student recently visited Lakelands Primary School for a four-week teaching program, in partnership with Curtin University.
Student Samantha Laird and visual arts teacher Kim Fitzpatrick collaborated to deliver the program on self-portraits to Year 4, 5 and 6.
Ms Fitzpatrick said the children learnt about face shapes and proportions, with the emphasis on capturing a resemblance to themselves, rather than creating a perfect art piece.

“The students particularly enjoyed the blind continuous line-drawing exercise, where they were not allowed to look at their portrait as they were drawing it,” she said.
“That provided lots of laughter and a humorous end product.”
Ms Fitzpatrick said the students also created a collage, choosing colours that represented their personality and culture.
“The program is a wonderful opportunity for our children to work with a current practising artist,” she said.
“At the same time the university student gets a taste of what it would be like to work in a school setting.
“I always pick up a few new skills as an art teacher too.”
Ms Fitzpatrick has supported the program for the past three years.
The students’ self-portraits will be on display at Lakelands Shopping Centre later this year.
