Up and coming Mandurah boxing stars Sophie Ingledew and Devan Ninyette went undefeated on their way to taking out titles at the Australasian Youth Golden Gloves Championships in Perth earlier this month.
The Moorey’s Martial Arts duo were emphatic in their tournaments, with both winning all of their bouts on unanimous points decisions.
Ninyette, 15, fought above his age bracket taking on 17 and 18-year-olds as he punched his way through three bouts en route to his first Golden Gloves win.
Meanwhile Ingledew, 17, scorched her more experienced opponents in the 54-kilogram youth division to claim her belt.
The pair now take on the status of Australasian champions, with Ninyette saying the win is still yet to fully sink in.
“I was just shocked, like, I couldn’t believe I’d won when it was over,” he said.
“To have that experience and go through with three big wins, it was awesome.”
Ingledew said the victory ranked up there with her best, a fair achievement for a star on the rise.
“It felt great just being in the ring at the tournament so to come away with a win was massive,” she said.
“It’s a pretty big event on our calendar so to finish it with that success was pretty special.”
The 17-year-old young gun went straight from her winning bout into a two-week training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport as part of her preparation for the Youth World Championships this month.
Ingledew flies out to Budapest for what will be the biggest event of her young boxing career this week, where she will represent Australia as she strives for a gold medal.
A win at the tournament would see the young gun pushing for a spot at the 2020 Olympic Games, but the Halls Head College student isn’t letting the nerves get to her.
“I think I just feel more excited than nervous at this point,” she said.
“I’ve really been loving all the preparation and right now I just can’t wait to get over there and get in the ring and start boxing again.”
Ingledew flies out bound for the Youth World Championships this Friday night.
Meanwhile Ninyette will resume his training at Moorey’s Martial Arts, with his eyes fixed on his next set of bouts in the coming weeks.
