A man and woman accused of assault and disorderly behaviour at Smart Street Mall in Mandurah have pleaded not guilty to a number of charges.
Callan Patrick Gilligan, 21, and Kayla Ann Gilligan, 24, appeared at Mandurah Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.
Police were called to Smart Street Mall about midnight on Friday, July 27, following reports of a disturbance.
They say a man and woman were engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with security staff and members of the public after being refused entry to a nightclub.
Police allege after the initial disturbance Mr Gilligan struck a female to the face, causing her to fall to the ground.
It is further alleged that when a man came to assist the victim, Ms Gilligan bit him on the jaw, breaking his skin.
Mr Gilligan pleaded not guilty to behaving in a disorderly manner in a police station or lock-up and disorderly behaviour in public.
He was not required to enter a plea to a charge of common assault, as police prosecutor Senior Constable Tamara Read said the charge could still be upgraded.
Ms Gilligan pleaded not guilty to one charge of assault occasioning bodily harm. She did not enter a please for a disorderly behaviour in public charge.
The pair’s defence lawyer Damien Grimes told the court his clients were from Mandurah but lived and worked in Melbourne.
The case was adjourned until September 28.
