Mandurah MLA David Templeman has insisted the Government’s plans to introduce a container deposit scheme in Western Australia are well underway, with implementation expected in 2020.
The State Government banned lightweight plastic bags earlier this month, with further measures to be put in place to limit the use of plastic.
Mr Templeman said consultation with the public had resulted in 97 per cent of the 3,236 people surveyed backing a container deposit scheme.
This would help to protect the environment, reduce litter and increase recycling rates.
Mr Templeman said once implemented the scheme could create as many as 500 jobs at new container sorting and processing facilities.
“People in Mandurah and around WA have told us that they want a container deposit scheme, so we’ll be introducing one in 2020,” he said.
“The McGowan Government is serious about reducing the use of plastics in WA, which is why we banned the bag in July and we’re working towards a container deposit scheme.
“I encourage local businesses, organisations and households across Mandurah to take up the Plastic Free July challenge and find out how they can reduce their plastic use.”
When the scheme is introduced, people will be offered a 10 cent refund for the return of every eligible bottle or can.
