Canning MP Andrew Hastie has opened Mandurah Mums Cottage’s newly renovated garden, made possible thanks to the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program.
The cottage serves as a drop-in centre for women and children, and in particular provides a safe and nurturing environment for families experiencing domestic abuse.
The centre includes child-friendly green spaces, play areas, and acts as a hub for mentoring, counselling and advocacy.
“I first learned of plans to establish a Mums Cottage in Mandurah through the rotary club of Mandurah in 2016,” Mr Hastie said.
“Along with plans for a new building, Kaye presented me with her vision for a garden that would provide a sanctuary for women and children needing a safe place.”

Mr Hastie invited Kaye Seeber to apply to round three of the Government’s Stronger Communities Program and was able to secure $10,200 for the cottage which, along with other sponsors and supporters, got the centre up and running.
“The Stronger Communities grants are designed to create vibrant and resilient communities across Australia by offering a funding option for worthwhile projects that might otherwise fall through the cracks,” Mr Hastie said.
“When Kaye approached me to request support for the cottage garden I was happy to oblige.
“This is a good example of the how the government can support the efforts of local community initiatives.
“By partnering with organisations such as WA Mums Cottage, the Coalition Government is ensuring important services are available to everyone.”
The dedicated staff at Mums Cottage offer companionship, guidance, education and assistance to all family members, with an emphasis on providing a safe and supportive place of respite for women and children.
“It was great to officially open the garden and witness the culmination of a lot of hard work, not only by the Mums Cottage team, but also by the many local businesses and individuals who pitched in to make this garden come to life,” Mr Hastie said.
The cottage garden is just one of 10 Stronger Communities Program grants awarded this year in Canning.
The Government has already announced $22.5 million for a new round of the program with grants between $2500 and $20,000 available for successful applications.
Round four of the Stronger Communities program opens at the end of July.
