Mandurah Catholic College’s girls’ basketball First V team has won the All Schools Basketball championship for the second consecutive year.
The team went into the grand final playoff undefeated, a convincing run that reinforced their dominance after claiming the title in 2017.
Led by talented and determined co-captains Ella Sigley (year 12) and Georgia Adams (year 12) the girls took on Clontarf Aboriginal College.
In a physical encounter Clontarf challenged MCC in the first half with Kameron Bazzo (year 11) and Tori Ranson (year nine) playing outstanding defence and controlling the boards for the college.
Grace Lawler (year 11) soaked up the pressure and kept her composure at the point guard position while Olivia Bassett-Scarfe (year 11) continued to slice her way to the basket to great effect.
The second half saw Kloe Phillips-Jones (year 11) and Ruby James (year nine) pile on the defensive pressure while Holly Britton (year seven) got into the passing lanes for several crucial steals that led to a handy lead for MCC.
Clontarf came storming back but was stopped by Jaide Britton (year 10) and Kaitlyn Srhoj (year seven), who made sure of the win with stellar play.
MCC triumphed 68-53 to take out back-to-back titles, under the skillful direction of coach and physical education teacher Brendan Macdonald.
Special mention must be made of the tremendous play and leadership of Ella and Georgia who have represented their College in the First V since year eight and have been instrumental in the success of the College’s basketball program.
