The Peel Cavaliers have kicked off their bid for a Landmark Country Football Championships three-peat, releasing their initial squad and holding their first training session at Pinjarra’s Sir Ross McLarty Oval on Wednesday.
The 73-man squad is headed by the Peel Football and Netball League’s top talent from all eight clubs, boasting a diverse mix of youth and experience while packing some star-power punch.
Names like Waroona’s Rhett Mason, Rockingham’s Mitchel Curnow and Pinjarra’s Rory O’Brien have the potential to form a lethal midfield, while Falcon Brad Holmes and Baldivis’ Ben Higgs would be a potent combination in the forward half.
The initial side will be trimmed down to the best available players over the coming weeks, with two-time Landmark carnival premiership coach Clayton Falkingham once again leading the charge.
Falkingham has been at the helm of the Cavaliers’ back-to-back flags over the past two years, and will be hoping to make it three straight division one wins this July.
Peel kicks off its campaign on Friday, July 6 with their first clash coming against Great Northern.
It won’t take long for their rivalry with the South West Football League to be renewed, with the two to meet in their second games of the carnival on the opening day.
Peel has bested the South West in the last two division one grand finals, adding new life to a tournament that was perennially dominated by the SWFL.
The Cavaliers resume on day two with games against Upper Great Southern and the Avon Football Association, and will play on Sunday should they qualify for a finals berth.
