The Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club is up for one of the state body’s highest honours after being named as a finalist for Surf Life Saving WA’s patrol club of the year award.
The club is one of six to be recognised as finalists for their outstanding efforts patrolling local beaches, with the nomination coming on the back of a season that saw them take on extra patrols at Mandurah’s Town Beach as well as their San Remo base.
Life savers also took on roving patrols north to Singleton and south to Blue Bay, with the club tallying a whopping 3950 hours of work across the season.
Of those hours, 484 were community service hours which included providing water safety for the Mandurah Triathlon Club and various local schools during beach carnivals.
In total, the Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club increased its workload more than 40 per cent compared to last season.
Perhaps their most tireless worker across the season was youth member Liam Gould, who was selected as a finalist in the youth lifesaver of the year category.
Liam accumulated a massive 172.25 patrol hours across the time frame, and also acted as a patrol vice captain and IRB crew member for the club.
Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club president Elaine Daniels said she was thrilled to have both Liam and the club recognised for their hard work.
“This is an incredible achievement which would not have been possible without the dedication of our lifesavers who tirelessly gave their own time to ensure our local beaches were safe for the community to use and enjoy,” she said.
The Surf Life Saving WA awards of excellence winners will be announced at a gala dinner being held at the Crown Ballroom on Saturday, June 9.
