Fishability will now be able to offer those living with disabilities in the Mandurah area a more enriched fishing experience thanks to a new Fiat Ducato van.
The organisation, which provides regular recreational fishing opportunities for children and adults living with disabilities, was presented with the new vehicle on Thursday thanks to fundraising support from the Personnel Employed at Alcoa Charity Help (PEACH), Lotterywest and the Margaret Down Foundation.
The van will complement the existing trailer the program volunteers use to transport essential supplies for each fishing activity, in a safe and easily accessible manner.
These supplies include fishing equipment, first aid kits, safety and rescue gear, chairs and trestle tables.
The program was originally launched as a metropolitan project, but Fishability has grown exponentially since coming to Mandurah in 2012, with participation numbers skyrocketing over the past 12 months.
“The new vehicle will enable volunteers to participate in the program with reassurance of a safe vehicle to use, that can store all essential items, without impacting on their own personal vehicle,” Fishability executive officer Di Bruce said.
“There is demand for the program to extend to areas such as Rockingham and Pinjarra, and with a focus of expanding into schools, it is anticipated the program will cater to over 150 children and adults living with disabilities in the Peel region each week.
“The new vehicle will support this expansion aptly.”
