With colourful and creative rafts named HMAS Corona and Deez Nuts, it’s no surprise that the third annual South Yunderup Recycled Raft Regatta was a hit with locals.
The event, organised by South Yunderup Residents and Ratepayers Association (SYRRA) has been building momentum over the past three years, with an increase in the numbers of competitors and spectators.
Built from recycled, non toxic materials the rafts were put to the test in the Sapphire Canal on January 28.
Rafts can only be propelled by human power and must travel across the canal and back.
The canal is around 40 metres wide.
SYRRA secretary Dianna Eldridge said over the years, rafts had been made more sturdier and creative.
It’s not all smooth sailing though, with participants forced to battle an onslaught of flour bombs on their journey to the finish line.
Ms Eldridge said despite the strong winds on the day, the event was a huge success and thanked locals for turning out and adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
She said about 40 spectators attended the event.
A variety of creations raced in a variety of classes including Flamin Gallah’s and Bananas, Sinkin Slowly, Oar Nah’s and Piston, Lego Cruiser, Bat Mobiles, The tank, Flag Fever and Hot Tub.
“I did hear talk this morning of a flour bomb launcher being prepared for next year,” Ms Eldridge said
“Huge thanks must go to the Shire of Murray, Chris and his crew at the Canals Shop for sponsoring us once again and the South Yunderup Residents and Ratepayers Association for organising.
“A good time was had by all, with only one bull ant bite causing a brief tear,”
She said it was pleasing to see children enjoying time outdoors rather than using technology.
“There wasn’t a mobile phone in sight,” she said.
