Man charged after theft from Pinjarra war veteran

The man who allegedly stole $1500 from a retired war veteran in Pinjarra, has been charged with stealing.

Police charged the 21-year-old Pinjarra man on Thursday.

He is expected to appear in the Mandurah Magistrates Court on October 17.

Police will allege the man knocked on 94-year-old Ernie Haynes’ door and asked for a glass of milk about 11:20am on October 3.

The Generous New Guinea war veteran was quick to invite the young man in and pour him some milk.

While inside the house the man allegedly took Mr Haynes’ wallet that was sitting on the benchtop.

The following day the Mr Haynes noticed that his wallet was missing and reported it to police.

Mr Haynes has since been received donations from generous 6PR radio listeners.

The Perth-based radio station told of Mr Haynes ordeal during their breakfast program.

Callers were quick to respond, raising $500 to replace the stolen money.

A further $1000 of prize money was chipped into the cause after host Basil Zempilas answered all the station’s Window and Door Replacement Thousand Dollar Minute quiz.
