West Australian author Faye Bohling will visit Mandurah library on Friday afternoon to share the story her upbringing as the daughter of a troubled single mother, which she recounted in her book The Laundry Girl.
Ms Bohling, who was born in Perth in 1936, was often left with informal foster carers and remote family members while she was growing up, failing to understand the reason why her mother abruptly left her at those places.
At the ripe age of ten, she found herself at the Home of Good Shepherd, an institution described by Ms Bohling as a cruel and forbidding place.
Instead of being schooled by nuns, she ended up working at the institution’s laundry, where she stayed for two long and lonely years.
Ms Bohling recounted her personal struggle in her emotional autobiography The Laundry Girl, which was published in 2015.
During her presentation at Mandurah library, attendees will be able to meet the author in person, discuss the book and enjoy light refreshments.
The free event will run from 12pm to 1pm.
