Jarrad Seng is known for his uncompromising photography: taken all over the world, his images of sweeping environments and intimate character studies definitely have something to say about the human condition.
Little surprise, then, that he’s jumped from Survivor superfan to contestant for the second season of Australian Survivor.
“I’ve always loved the show, I’ve watched it since I was a kid,” Seng said.
“When the opportunity came up for the Australian version, I jumped at the chance.”
Seng – know for throwing himself into extreme situations in order to get great photos, but also because of something of an adrenaline addiction – knew taking part in the show would be the next logical step.
“I’ve always kind of been into throwing myself into these situations where I have no idea what the outcome is going to be,” he said.
“I don’t know, there’s always something exciting about that, about seeing how I come out the other side. So I thought Survivor was perfect for that.”
You can draw a line between Seng’s career and spot on Survivor – the same need to understand human connection seems to drive each.
“In my photos, there’s definitely a sense of trying to understand the connections between things,” he said.
“And I guess that’s what I’ve always loved about Survivor as well.
“You throw these complete strangers onto an island with basically no idea how they’re going to react with each other.
“As a photographer, I don’t really work in the studio, I don’t do family portraits or anything like that – I’m always trying to push the boundaries, at least my own.
“And something like Survivor, a lot of people might just see it as a TV show, but there’s a really interesting side of seeing what people do in these extreme situations, how they react, and what’s important to them.
“I’ve found myself in many positions as a photographer where you have to use your wits, and I think this will just be a natural extension of that.”
Seng will take part on Australian Survivor Season 2 with 23 other contestants aged from 20 to 51.
Australian Survivor premieres on Network Ten at 7.30pm on Sunday July 30.
