Students ‘Have Sum Fun’ at new local maths comp

Students from a number of local schools had the opportunity to participate in the first Mathematics Association of Western Australia’s ‘Have Sum Fun’ competition for the Peel region.

The competition, which had students in years 5/6 and years 7/8 compete face-to-face in a quiz night format, was held at Rockingham Senior High School, with local schools Frederick Irwin Anglican School, Mandurah Catholic College, Singleton Primary School and John Tonkin College in attendance.

“Teams of six students raced against the clock to solve four intense rounds of eight challenging problems,” co-ordinator Rachael Whitney-Smith said.

“Problem solving is one of the proficiencies [sic.] used in the new Australian mathematics curriculum.”

She said students from both state and private schools competed side-by-side in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and congratulated all involved.

Frederick Irwin got first place in the year 5/6 category, and in the year 7/8 category South Coast Baptist College emerged the winner.

“Singleton Primary School and South Coast Baptist College were also commended for receiving a perfect round,” Ms Whitney-Smith said.
