A pelican injured by fishing hooks has been saved by WA Seabird Rescue after two local men found the bird on Mandurah’s canals.
Rabie van der Merwe and Steve Zielinski spotted the stricken pelican which had a string of three fish hooks lodged just below its eye on Monday
“Linde from WA Sea Rescue responded, captured the bird and removed the hooks,” Mr van der Merwe said.
“Linde said that this has become a daily occurrence in the south west of WA.
“Pelicans are known to snap up baited hooks of fisherman.”
Anyone who spots a pelican – or any bird – in distress, is urged to contact WA Seabird Rescue on 0418 952 683.
The pelican found on Monday had the hook removed and was taken to a vet for further observation.
