Adults and children gathered at the Mandurah Community Museum to honour Mandurah’s iconic figure Yaburgurt.
Yaburgurt was a Noongar leader born in Koolyninap, Halls Head, in 1824.
He saw the arrival of settlers when he was very young, and worked throughout his life together with them, becoming an iconic reconciliation figure.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of his passing and to celebrate Aboriginal heritage in NAIDOC week, the City of Mandurah organised a Yarning about Yabugurt session.
George Walley told Yaburgurt’s life story to visitors and performed one of his songs about the country.
He then talked about Aboriginal seasons and played an old recording from Yaburgurt singing and speaking.
Children also handcrafted a hanging mobile representing the six Noongar seasons.
