The City of Mandurah received one award and a high commendation during the Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) 2016 Awards of Excellence held in Fremantle on June 16.
The City was nominated for four different awards across 11 categories.
Mandurah received the Award for Parks and Open Space for their Ocean Road Active Reserve and Waste Water Re-Use Project.
The award aims to promote vibrant and well-designed parks and pen spaces by rewarding the best designed and managed projects.
The City’s Ocean Road reserve project created an environmentally sustainable water supply for the irrigation of two primary school ovals by using waste water from the Caddadup Waste Water Treatment Plant.
The plant continuously treats water for re-use underground through the natural soil and extracted via bores.
The project also redeveloped the small Ocean Road primary school oval into a two-hectare active reserve to be enjoyed by the community.
This project was also a finalist for the Award for Use of Technology.
The City’s high commendation was awarded within the category of Leisure Facilities for the stage 1 in the development of the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.
City of Mandurah employee Alisha Joynes was a finalist for the 2016 David Aldous Student of the Year Award for her effort and achievements while studying a Bachelor of Sport, Recreation and Event Management.
And the Mandurah Active Recreation Strategy 2015-2025 was also selected as a finalist for the Leisure and/or Open Space Planning Award.
