THERE’S a simple reason why Jenny Talia ended up on the politically incorrect comedy trail like she did – it was hereditary.
Funnyman Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson’s daughter is returning to the Peel region to perform at one of her favourite venues.
“I have friends now, that I only know because I perform at the Ravenswood Hotel,” Talia siad.
“It’s so good to be back there – to be back home.
“Anywhere in Western Australia feels like I’m performing to a home crowd.”
It’s surprising the Kalgoorlie-born comedian – who is now based in Chicago – didn’t grow up wanting to make people laugh.
Not only does she have one of Australia’s best known comedians for a father, but comedy comes so naturally to Talia.
However it wasn’t until she moved to America, and produced two country albums, before she decided to give musical comedy a go.
“I started singing in pubs to help pay the bills and as soon as people heard my accent they wanted me to sing an Australian song,” Talia said.
“But the only Australian songs I knew were Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson songs.
“Soon I was getting bookings to sing those songs.
“It was then my dad was looking for a support act for a big tour of Europe.
“I put my hand up and in that 74-date tour my comedy album outsold the two country albums I had done.”
Since then, Talia has produced a total of six albums – including her most recent, festive album Christmashits.
But who said it was the wrong time of year to embrace the Christmas cheer?
“I will be performing that album at the Ravenswood,” Talia said.
“It’s July so I’m genius; it’s as if I planned it.
“But the Ravenswood is the perfect crowd for me.
“I don’t want to say experiment, but I can try stuff with them that I usually wouldn’t.
“It’s so relaxed.
“And some of the best jokes I’ve told have been at the Ravenswood.”
Jenny Talia will be at the Ravenswood Hotel on July 18.
