IT IS the end of an era this Sunday as the iconic Slug & Hare Alehouse closes its doors for good.
Co-owner Mary Collins said the popular nightspot had been in the family for 10 years and said she would miss the venue.
“This is a small, family place and we have made so many friends from working at the Slug,” she said.
Ms Collins said children Jesse Deane, Magee Collins and Tully Collins had all worked at the bar at some point during the venue’s history since it opened in 2000.
Ms Collins with husband Richard took over the ownership of the tenanted building in 2002, back when it was the only nightspot in town.
The family co-owns the business with Megan and Grahaem Donovan.
The former Commonwealth Bank building was transformed into the venue known and loved by locals for its favourite ‘Slug Juice’.
“For the first five years we were open, we were the only bar around here,” she said.
“We have had lots of locals who have met at the Slug and later married.
“A few relationships have flourished in here.”
Ms Collins said her family would not be continuing in the industry and said she was grateful for all her staff over the years.
“All the staff have been wonderful,” she said.
“It has been a big part of us.”
Over the years, Ms Collins said the Slug & Hare had supported local football and cricket teams, supplied locals with entertainment and held local bands and DJ’s.
After living in the region for 30 years Ms Collins said the venue was a big part of their lives.
“Everyday it has been a part of their lives so it’s a bit sad,” she said.
“Generations have come to the Slug.”
Slug & Hare will hold a happy hour on Friday before the final celebration this Sunday.
Former Slug & Hare regulars Rhay and Danny will return from 6pm before the doors shut for good at 10pm.
“It will be an all day farewell party.”
