Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) fighters from Mandurah and across the state will hit the floor in Rockingham for the Porrada Pro Challenge this weekend.
Organised by GFT Mandurah champion Leo Bobadilla, the challenge will see 140 martial artists – including some interstate competitors – taking to the mats in search of the more than $1000 in prize money up for grabs.
Fighters ranging from juniors to masters will be looking to submit their opponents at the tournament, with five minutes allowed for all adult bouts with the winner progressing forward and the loser being eliminated.
Bobadilla said the event offered local BJJ fighters the chance to compete without having to travel to Perth, and was rapt with the response.
“To have 140 people coming to fight is a big thing,” he said.
“It gives some of the local guys the chance to mix it up with more experienced people and it also spreads the sport through the region.
“The fighters are world class so it’s going to be a great show for people to experience what BJJ is all about.”
The event will be the first of a handful of Porrada Pro Challenge tournaments, with the next few scheduled to be held at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.
This weekend’s competition will be held at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex in Rockingham on Sunday, December 9, kicking off with juniors at 9.30am.
