Star Mandurah surfing duo April McPherson and Macklin Flynn will be carving up for the WA junior team when they take to the waves at the 2018 Australian Junior Surfing Titles in South Australia this weekend.
The Mandurah Board Riders pair were picked among 23 of Western Australia’s best up-and-coming talents to represent the state at the national titles after notching impressive results at the WA Junior Surfing Titles earlier this year.
Now they will be hoping to help the west to a national championship, as they go head-to-head against neighbouring states at the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Following on from her outstanding 2018 season in the water, McPherson will line up for WA’s under 18 junior girls division as well as the under 19 girls all-stars.
Meanwhile Flynn is set to compete in the under 14s grommet boys category.
Surfing WA development manager Tom Dickson said he is excited to see the state’s new generation or surfers head away to perform on the national stage.
“The Australian Junior Surfing Titles are a culmination of a lot of hard work and preparation for these young surfers,” he said.
“We hope our WA High Performance program has best prepared them for arguably the biggest event of their young careers thus far. We wish everyone the very best of luck in the upcoming tournament.”
A win at the national level is regarded as a major step in a surfer’s competitive career with the list of past winners featuring some of the greatest names in world surfing including Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning, plus former world champions Mark Richards, Tom Carroll and Damian Hardman.
The Australian Junior Surfing Titles will kick off on Sunday, December 2 running through to Saturday, December 8.
