It’s amazing the difference a haircut can make. Just ask those at Halo’s soup kitchen.
Since October local hairdresser and owner of Carefree Artistic Hair And Beauty, Debbie Gourd has been volunteering her time to give haircuts to those in need.
At least every second Sunday – depending on work commitments – Ms Gourd will be at the Sutton Street Hall from 10am-12pm, donating her time and skills.
“I've always done work in Cambodia, and other countries for our church so this is nothing,” she said.
“This is because I love my job.
“They're grateful for this and this is nothing out of my day – it's just two hours – and it's not hard work.”
Ms Gourd – who has more than 20 years experience in hairdressing – said she was surprised at how humble the people she helped were.
“They need a lift, and I'm happy to give them that life,” she said.
“They're not demanding; they are quite humble.
“Sometimes when you go to places, it's very demanding and very all-consuming of you, but this is not consuming of me at all.”
Halo’s soup kitchen is open 12-2pm, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, at Sutton Street Hall.
