Futsal, a five-a-side soccer form picking up speed on the sports scene, will be showcased at its finest when the Perth-based West Coast Futsal bring their open tournament at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre at the end of this month.
The open will see teams hit the field across three days (March 31 – April 2), competing across a number of divisions including under 14 boys, under 16 boys and girls, youth men, open women and open men.
The junior categories will see teams battling it out in a pair of 20 minute halves, with the periods increased to 25 minutes for seniors.
West Coast Futsal operations manager Andreas Servatius said the event would look to showcase the pathways available to athletes through the sport.
“It’s really exciting for us to come to Mandurah and hold our event there, as it lets us expand the sport and give people in town more avenues to play,” he said.
“The event is going to be a great way for us to show people what they can achieve with futsal.
“WA takes state teams to compete in national competitions and from there Australia takes its national team to compete in international events, so there are pathways for people to travel the world through the sport.
“It’s an exciting time and getting down to Mandurah means a lot for us.”
State team selectors will be scouting the talent at the Mandurah event, eyeing off potential players for West Coast’s team to compete at the next National Futsal Championships in Sydney, January 2019.
All-star teams for each division will also be named at the conclusion of the open, with jerseys presented to each player.
All teams will compete for a total prize pool of $3000.
Team nominations cost $195 for junior squads, and $395 for each senior outfit.
