The long-awaited Falcon Bay shark barrier is one step closer to becoming a reality after the City of Mandurah opened up the proposal for public consultation.
The request for comment comes after the state government promised $200,000 in May, 2017, to build the beach enclosure and the completion of the City’s feasibility study in October.
The City proposes to build a 265 metre “L-shape” barrier to provide a safe area for swimmers at Falcon Bay.
The proposed barrier would encompass the swimming pontoon.
Mayor Rhys Williams said the City would hold a community information session at 6pm on March 7 to discuss the proposed shark barrier.
He said the feasibility study addressed options for a shark barrier and the costs of installation.
“We all know that Mandurah is such a special place with plenty on offer, from our waterways, our people and our relaxed alfresco lifestyle so it’s important that our community joins in conversations, like the Falcon Bay beach enclosure, to help shape our future together,” Mayor Williams said.
“Now is the time to have your say on the proposed shark barrier and we hope to see you at this important community meeting.”
The shark barrier was an election commitment of Dawesville MP Zak Kirkup which was then funded by the newly elected Labor government.
Shark barriers are in place at four beaches around the state at Cockburn, Quinns Rock, Hillarys and Albany.
The cost of installation is about $1100 a metre, which would cost the Falcon Bay proposal at $291,500 excluding ongoing maintenance.
Mayor Williams said the final cost of the barrier would “be dependent on the type of barrier used to satisfy the conditions of the bay and the community consultation outcomes”.
