Western Australia’s premier netball team, the West Coast Fever, will prepare for the upcoming Suncorp Super Netball season when they take on the Queensland Firebirds in front of a sold out crowd at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) this Sunday.
The showdown will be one of two pre-season clashes the Fever host the Firebirds in this weekend, with the first to be held at the State Netball Centre.
The game will be accompanied by a skills clinic run by the Fever at MARC on Wednesday, February 21, promptly followed by the WA squad’s own open training session.
It will give young fans a chance to get an up close look at their idols, with 120 Mandurah Netball Association (MNA) youngsters attending the open training to soak up the expert knowledge.
Head coach Stacey Marinkovich said the squad was excited to put on a show for its Mandurah-based fans.
“It’s fantastic to be able to get out into the Peel region and interact with our fans,” she said.
“We know we have a large supporter base in Mandurah, so we are incredibly excited about the clinic, open training session, and of course, the game on Sunday.
“A special thanks must go to the City of Mandurah and the state government for their ongoing support of netball, and we look forward to continuing that relationship into the future.”
The Mandurah Netball Association will form a large contingent for the week’s festivities, with its 120 representative players all attending the skills clinic and pre-season game, which have both sold out.
More netball:
MNA development officer Alex Shorter said it would be a great chance for the association’s young guns to revel in the company of the sport’s elite.
“It’s absolutely amazing to have the Fever coming to town twice in the one week,” she said.
“We have so many kids that are just netball junkies and they’re going to have the chance to train with and watch the Fever up close, which is really special for them.
“Some of the players coming to town are Commonwealth Games stars and for our young talent to get a look in at how they go about it is going to be invaluable.”
The skills clinic will be run from 4pm – 6pm Wednesday, with the Fever’s open training to follow directly after.
The pre-season game against Queensland kicks off at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre from 11am Sunday, February 25.
