Mandurah’s young basketballers showed off their skills with a strong set of results at the Basketball WA under 16s and 18s Country Championships in Perth over the weekend.
The Magic’s men’s and women’s teams took to the courts and produced some promising performances, headlined by a runner-up finish from the under 16s men.
The women’s sides in both age groups did enough for a podium finish with each claiming third, while the 18 men (fourth) and the division two 16 men (sixth) remained strong in their groups.
Mandurah’s up and comers also produced a number of outstanding individual performances, with Sharni Barton (under 16s women), Tori Ranson (under 16s women), Maddie Gillet (under 16s women), Darren Beard (under 18s men) and Riley Parker (under 16s men) all chosen as all-stars after pouring in contributions for the Magic.
More on the Magic:
The youngsters were also able to get a glimpse of what it takes to become a State Basketball League player for the Magic, with SBL guns Bree Klasztorny and Rachel Halleen taking up two of the coaching roles.
Mandurah Basketball Association operations manager Francine Nicol said the club was rapt with the performance of its young talent.
“We always love it when country champs rolls around because it’s a chance for players of all levels in our organisation to represent Mandurah,” she said.
“It’s always exciting to see them playing for Mandurah so to see them all doing so well is just a bonus.
“They all train so hard and they deserve all the success they get.”
The next set of Country Championships to get underway is for the under 12s, 13s, 14s, and 15s, with the girls taking to the courts in Perth this weekend before the boys to follow the weekend after.
