The Futures VII fight night will be a groundbreaking one for women’s Muay Thai in Western Australia when it holds the state’s first ever female four-way elimination event in Mandurah next month.
Nicola Callender, Kaylee Mallard, Kaitlyn Vance and Emma Graham will make history when they go head-to-head in two separate bouts, with the winners progressing to the night’s semi-main event.
True Grit director and event organiser Chantel Green said the fighters were thrilled to be part of the state’s first female elimination event.
“All four of them jumped at the chance to be part of it and they’re pretty stoked that they finally have the chance to test themselves with something like this,” she said.
“It’s going to be hard work given two of them will have to fight twice in one night, but all of them are up to the challenge.”
The main event will pit True Grit fighter Dechsak Sangmorakot against top WA prospect Barrie Oliver in a title fight.
The bout will be Sangmorakot’s final time in the ring, with retirement on the horizon.
A total 19 bouts will be fought on the card, as the Mandurah-based show continues to gather steam among WA’s Muay Thai circles.
“Every time we hold another event we notice the fighters are getting more and more excited to be part of it,” Green said.
“It’s a unique show and it gives people a real opportunity to showcase themselves as fighters.”
The night will also raise funds for a cause close to the heart of many West Australian Muay Thai fighters, with the proceeds of auctioned-off memorabilia going to the family of Jessica Lindsay, who died due to weight-cutting late last year.
“A lot of people in our sport in WA were close to Jess and knew that she loved everything about Muay Thai,” Green said.
“Hopefully we can raise some funds and do our part to help out her family in what has obviously been a tough time.”
Futures VII will be held at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Saturday, March 3 after the venue proved a success with the previous Futures installment.
Doors open at 5.30pm with tables of 10 available at $550. Individual entry is $40 per adult, $20 per child under 15 and children under the age of six get in free.
