Mandurah brothers Macklin and Ace Flynn showed that a passion for the waves runs in their family when they both took out wins at the ninth event of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps at Trigg Point on Sunday.
Macklin continued his impressive run on West Aussie waves with a victory in the under 12 boys division (the very same class he was crowned state champion in at the WA Junior Surf Titles in 2017) while his younger brother Ace showed he’s not far behind by taking out back-to-back titles in the under 8 parent-assist final.
Macklin showed all the signs of a future champion of the sport when he posted a perfect-10 ride in the final to secure his win.
Leading a group of exciting young surfers, Macklin catapulted himself into first place finishing on a combined total of 18.00 (from a possible 20).
He went through the event undefeated and finished ahead of a Izaak Brown (Lake Munmorah, NSW), fellow Mandurah mate Maverick Wilson, and Josh Willcox (Margaret River, WA).
“I'm here competing with my brothers and I’m really stoked to have won,” Macklin said.
“Thanks to my mum and dad as well as all the other boys in the final, I love the Surfer Groms Comps.”
Macklin’s victory comes just one week after he claimed fourth place at the 13th annual Taj’s Small Fries event in Yallingup.

Ace and Macklin’s brother Kai also surfed at the event.
But the Flynn family weren’t the only Mandurah surfers to shine at Trigg over the weekend, with Paige Sanders (fourth in under 12 girls), Austin Wroth (third in under 10 boys), Harry Jenkins (fourth in under 10 boys), Luxe Higgins (second in under 10 girls) and Neco Higgins (fourth in under 10 girls) all taking out places.
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps, presented by Wahu, have helped to launch the careers of many of Australia’s most promising junior surfers with almost 800 children set to take part in the 2017/18 event series.
Previous champions include Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox, Luke Hynd, Eli Steele, Kai Hing, Chris Zaffis, Quinn Bruce, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols, Holly Wawn and Laura Poncini.
