A crowd of more than 300 swimmers from around the Peel, South West and metropolitan regions is expected to descend on Doddi’s Beach for the fourth annual Mandurah Masters Swimming Club Australia Day Swim next week.
The club has been hard at work organising it’s only open water event for the year, which will see participants taking on either a one, two or four-kilometre dash in the waters off Halls Head Parade.
Mandurah Masters committee member Paul Jacklin said it was the club’s major race for the year, and was hopeful the fourth installment of the Australia Day dash would bring about a record crowd.
“As a club we really look forward to this event every year – it’s a great way for people to get active and kick off their Australia Day,” he said.
“We get a really good mix of locals along with swimmers from down south and around Perth, and we’re hoping this year we can get more than 300 in the water.
“A lot of the competitors actually use the race to train for things like the Busselton Jetty Swim or the Rottnest Channel Swim, and we get a few families enter together so it’s a great atmosphere.
“Obviously Aussies love the water, so it’s a really good way to kick start Australia Day.”
The one kilometre swim is open to children as young as 11, while anyone aged 12-and-above can enter the longer distances.
Swimmers can register online at mandurahmannas.org.au or at Doddi’s Beach on the day between 7-8am.
The first swim kicks off at 8.30am.
