Work is under way on a project that will transform Dwellingup into a tourism town of national significance.
The Dwellingup National Trails Centre project has been in development for the past year, with significant planning and consultation undertaken by the Shire of Murray.
Site preparation commenced for the first project component, the relocation of the rail triangle and the implementation of a new train turntable, through a partnership between the Shire of Murray, Dwellingup Community Compact and Hotham Valley Railway.
The works are anticipated to finish in the middle of 2018, which will then allow for the Dwellingup History and Visitor Information Centre to be extended and transformed into a Trails Centre with additional toilets and hot showers as well as a skate park, pump park, adventure playground, entertainment stage, additional barbecue and picnic facilities and significant upgrades to parking, pathways and signage.
A realignment of the Munda Biddi Trail and Bibbulmun track through the town to meet at the Trails Centre is also proposed.
The building and rail works have been funded through the federal government’s Building Better Regions Fund.
According to Murray Shire President David Bolt, the project is an example of how groups working together can realise great outcomes.
“I am thrilled to announce that initial works have started on this consequential project that will create numerous jobs and position Dwellingup on the national trails and tourism map,” he said.
“The cooperation the Shire has enjoyed from Dwellingup Community Compact, Peel Development Commission, Departments of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Forest Heritage Centre, Mandurah and Peel Tourism Organisation and Alcoa, has been outstanding.
“I particularly appreciate Hotham Valley Railway’s support, significant time allocated and willingness to have new rail lines built and the rail platform refurbished, which has allowed the entire precinct to be activated”.
Dwellingup Community Compact chairman Peter White said the project would maximise Dwellingup’s natural assets as well as the attractiveness of Hotham Valley Railway and turn Dwellingup into a truly unique tourism experience.
“The community is very excited to see such positive progress, which will lead to a sustainable economy for our town,” Mr White said.
Dwellingup Community Compact and the Shire of Murray have invited comment on the Dwellingup National Trails Centre and Green Precinct Project.
According to Cr Bolt, the draft key element concepts are close to final master plan after a long process of both community and stakeholder consultation, however further comment is sought to ensure the project is fully aligned with the communities expectations.
