Entries close on December 18, with photographs of completed garments due by mid-February.
The competition, presented by the City of Mandurah, is inclusive to all skill levels and encourages the use of all art forms. Groups, designers and creative types of any medium are encouraged to enter.
Categories such as Avant-Garde, Transformation, Metallic, Youth and Tertiary Student provide the platform to explore and create awareness of issues and challenges in life, society or environment.
A strong emphasis is placed on reusing discarded objects or materials, supported by the Creative Reuse Award.
This year’s Creative Reuse winner, Jacq Chorlton, created an anglerfish – a feared predator of the deep - from more than 200 plastic milk bottles.
The irony is, this is the very same material is currently choking the oceans, becoming the biggest predator of our marine life.
A hot tip from long-time judge Lesley Wilkinson is to consider structure and form, to move thinking away from traditional clothing and more towards creating a sculptural artwork.
She also suggests to be innovative with materials – to use materials that have been manipulated or transformed rather than using commercially available fabric or materials.
Judging takes place in two stages.
The first round of pre-selection judging assesses photographs and artist statements, followed by a second, more formal event where the wearable art is presented on fully styled models to a panel of judges.
Winners and finalists are selected to be part of a full-length theatrical showcase, presenting wearable art in a highly entertaining stage performance over the weekend of June 9 and 10, 2018.
Wearable Art Mandurah was introduced in 2011 as part of the Stretch Arts Festival.
Since then the event has grown from a small designer show featuring 18 garments to become a major event, culminating in a full-length theatrical showcase and exhibition.
Wearable Art Mandurah is rapidly becoming a global wearable art leader and receives entries from across the world.
More than a competition, it builds capacity through workshops, showcase events and exhibitions of works.
Stories are shared, connections formed and skills developed through participants’ creation and presentation of wearable art.
The Wearable Art Mandurah team supports and encourages participants throughout the entire design, creation, judging and presentation process.
