Josiah accepted a certificate of appreciation, presented by shire president David Bolt on behalf of council and the Shire of Murray.
Josiah’s entry titled Rust in Peace, incorporated an upcycled garden bed made out of a preloved bed frame, and a worm farm which uses an old toilet to compost “deposits”.
According to Mr Bolt, it’s encouraging to witness the proactive approach our youth are adopting with regards to living more sustainably and reducing waste to landfill.
“It is very important that as a community we responsibly manage and reduce our waste to protect our health and environment,” Mr Bolt said.
Switch your Thinking’s Young Re-inventor of the Year competition challenges young people to re-think waste.
In 2017, Young Re-inventor of the Year adopted a “gardens alive” theme, and asked young people to re-invent rubbish to bring their garden to life.
The annual re-use program attracted 136 entries, created by over 400 young people from across Western Australia.
Shire of Murray participate actively in the Switch your Thinking program, a local government sustainability initiative.
