All-rounder Dane Ugle made a return to country cricket with a prolific 134 runs for Warnbro on Saturday, but his efforts weren’t enough to will the side to their first victory on the year as Anuj Dal recorded his own century to lead Mandurah to the win.
Batting first, Mandurah recovered from the early loss of opener Ian Lattimore when Jeremy Leatherbarrow (51 runs) and Ben Drummond (31) paired up for a 64-run partnership.
But it wasn’t until Dal arrived at the crease that Mandurah took total control of their innings.
The star batsman carved out a brilliant 120 not out, teaming with Justin Solly (31) to record an 83-run partnership before Warnbro broke through with a wicket.
A collapse in Mandurah’s tail followed the Solly wicket, but the damage had been done as they finished 8/266 on the back of Dal’s outstanding first century for the season.
Ugle led the way with the ball in his first game for the Swans since the 2014/15 season, with the former Perth Scorchers rookie taking 2/27 from his eight overs.
Warnbro openers Ben Doudle (23) and Ben Hinson (21) got their side’s chase off on the right foot, but were unable to carry on their good work after being caught and run out respectively.
Ugle arrived in the middle following the first wicket and put on a masterclass, bashing 19 boundaries (nine of them for six) on his way to a massive 134.
But he received little support as no remaining batsman breached double figures, and the side was dismissed on 215.
Lattimore was the pick of the Mandurah bowlers, taking 5/27 to secure the win for his side and cementing their place among the Peel Cricket Association top four.
Pinjarra defeat Shoalwater Bay
The centuries continued coming in round eight when Chris Zadow blasted an enormous 141 not out (off 121 deliveries) to lead Pinjarra to their sixth straight win.
Zadow single-handedly dragged the Tigers off the canvas after they opted to bat and found themselves in a 5/26 crater.
Teaming with Luke Gorman, who notched an unbeaten 80, Zadow nailed 23 boundaries and led the team out of a disaster and to a 5/260 total.
Dudley Cortland (50), James Stuart (49) and Graham Spinks (46) gave Shoalwater a chance in the chase, but they fell short on 239.
Waroona defeat Singleton
Some masterful bowling and a half century to Ben Wright saw Waroona hand Singleton their first loss of the season in a grand final rematch on Saturday.
Waroona was off to a good start when they dismissed opener Danny Woollard on just 14 runs and despite an unbeaten 49 from Jay Boyd and 40 from Tim Hutchison, Singleton could muster just 8/167.
The loss of opener Jayden Derosa on 12 left the chasers in a hole, but Wright hauled them out with a handy 53.
Singleton’s bowlers made sure Waroona would have to earn the win, forcing the game down to the wire as the visitors posted 7/169 to take a narrow victory in the heavyweight clash.
Halls Head defeat South Mandurah
Halls Head snapped their five-game losing skid in style when they rode a Sam Pendlebury century to a victory over South Mandurah.
Pendlebury’s 105 fell just seven runs short of single-handedly surpassing the Falcons’ team total of 112, but it was in-form bowler Lachlan Kinna who laid the foundation.
Kinna took a stunning 3/14 from 10 overs (a spell that included five maidens), as Souths were dismissed on 112 in the 36th over.
Pendlebury’s ton put the icing on the cake as Halls Head batted out their overs for 6/204.
White Knights Baldivis defeat Hillman Hornets
Masterful bowling from Matthew Jordan allowed Baldivis to fend off Hillman with relative ease on Saturday.
Jordan finished the day with a ridiculously efficient 3/18 from his 10 overs, ensuring Hillman would fall well short of the 170 Baldivis scored (led by 43 from Hayden Lynn) in their innings.
Ben Hasson was destructive with the ball for Hillman, taking 4/34 to give the Hornets a chance.
But it would go unaided as their chase of the total fell well short on 117.
