Primadonna Production is excited to be staging Once Upon A Mattress – based on The Hans Christian Andersen tale The Princess and the Pea – with music by Mary Rodgers – daughter of the famous Rodgers from Rodgers and Hammerstein.
This will be presented at the Boardwalk Theatre in conjunction with the Mandurah Performing Arts Community Partnership Programme for five shows, commencing on January 11 and concluding on the 14th.
Due to an unhappy curse, King Sextimus is unable to speak. Meanwhile, his terror-of- a-wife, Queen Aggravain, (Shelley Whiteaker) has taken over control of the kingdom, assisted by her wizard (Matthew Wake).
Keen to keep her son Prince Dauntless (Peter Bonner) endlessly single, she has decreed that only a princess who can pass her (unfair) test may marry her son. Further, no one else in the kingdom may marry until Prince Dauntless does.
Lady Larken (Caris Read) and Sir Harry (Vincent Moore) are extremely disturbed by this fact since Lady Larken is now pregnant, and therefore in pressing need of a wedding service.
Luckily, Sir Harry is able to find an amazing princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, (Sian Dhu) who comes from the Marsh lands.
She instantly charms Prince Dauntless and the Court, and the story of how this unlikely candidate wins out in the end is a delightful tale.
Directed by Carole Dhu, with musical direction by Bruce Angus, and a cast of lively characters and ensemble, this delightfully comic family musical is suitable for the whole family from age six upwards.
Tickets are selling now from MPAC.
