It was all smiles for Mandurah couple Renae and Darrin Croft when their 1959 Volkswagen Kombi van took out a win at the Sou’West Vintage Fest’s classic car show at Caves House in Yallingup over the weekend.
A total 47 vintage vehicles hit the road destined for the car show, with Renae and Darrin’s split-screen Kombi winning the public’s hearts and piling up the most votes on their way to the win.
“We were very surprised – we didn’t really go there expecting to win, we just wanted to go on a road trip and have a good time,” Renae said.
“It was really nice of everyone there to vote for our van.”
The couple acquired the Kombi 13 years ago, picking it up for $1500 from a roadside sale.
They have since restored it completely with the help of Mandurah Performance’s Mark Bone, saying the car is now part of the family.
“We just love it. We’ve always loved old vintage cars, especially the Kombi vans,” Renae said.
“It really is part of the family, and I don’t think we will ever sell it, we just love it too much.”
It was a long trip down the highway for the pair, with the van only reaching a top of 75 kilometres per hour, and was their first time entering a show.
