Shoalwater Bay edged closer to a top four berth when they claimed a win over Halls Head via Duckworth-Lewis method at Peelwood Turf over the weekend.
The visitors were awarded the victory despite rain cutting their innings to just 30 overs, as they needed just three runs to top Halls Head’s score with five wickets in hand.
It was an impressive all-around performance from Shoalwater, who called on their depth as they looked to rebound from a loss to Baldivis.
Damien Stanley, Mitchell Croxon and Brad Smith were impressive after receiving the call-up from Shoalwater’s unbeaten B-grade side.
Stanley led the way after Halls Head were sent in to bat first, taking the crucial wickets of Alex Dillon (36 runs) and Reid Klopper (22) on his way to the figures of 3/15 from eight overs.
His efforts taking the scalps of Halls Head’s leading scorers helped Shoalwater dismiss their opposition on 106 runs in the 45th over.
Shoalwater’s chase was off to a strong start when captain Sean Hetel tallied a sharp 26 runs.
Efforts from James Stuart (21), Grant Coles (14) and Sebastian Websdale (15*) saw Shoalwater out to 5/104 before the game was called off in the 30th over, with umpire Hugh Fidge awarding them the win.
“Another over and we would have chased down their score so it was nice to get the win,” Hetel said.
“We’re lucky enough to have some really strong depth at our club and the boys who came up from B-grade were fantastic.
“We were pretty happy to bowl first on what looked like a bit of a green wicket, and our batsmen followed up with some good runs.”
Shoalwater Bay will need a similar performance when they host the undefeated Mandurah this weekend.
Halls Head will also face an unbeaten when they battle it out with Singleton at Peelwood Turf.
Mandurah defeat South Mandurah
Mandurah Cricket Club picked up their third straight A-grade win to stay unbeaten on the year when they overcame South Mandurah on Saturday.
Batting first, Souths’ tail rallied behind 37 runs from Rick Geisler and a bunch of other strong contributions, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a collapse from the top as they were all out on 128 runs from 45.2 overs.
Despite not taking a wicket, Mandurah’s Ian Lattimore bowled one of the most impressive spells seen this season.
The PCA star allowed just 12 runs to be scored from his 10 overs, which included a stunning eight maidens.
He followed it up with a knock of 42 opening the batting for Mandurah, teaming with a half century from Matt Jenkinson (55) to lead the side to a win.
Pinjarra defeat Hillman Hornets
Pinjarra claimed their second straight victory when they took down the winless Hornets with a powerful batting display at Pinjarra Turf on Saturday.
Opener Jamie Lee blasted out 59 runs with 11 boundaries (four of them for six) to open the match for Pinjarra, and things only got worse for Hillman when Patrick Gorman (72) and Jason Poolman (78) combined at the crease.
The huge contributions from the trio paved the path for Pinjarra to score 5/249 from their 50 overs – a total they would defend with relative ease.
Hillman opener Jack Green shone for his side with 57 runs, but received little support as the Hornets were dismissed on 131 following a freakish performance from Pinjarra’s Jake Foley with the ball.
Foley was nothing short of outstanding as he claimed a thumping seven wickets and allowed just 17 runs from his 10 overs.
Waroona defeat Warnbro Swans
The Swans fell agonisingly short of claiming an upset win (which would have been their first) when they hosted Waroona on Saturday.
Things looked bleak when the Swans allowed Waroona to score 9/237 on the back of a powerful 83 runs from Keren Ugle and a further 49 from Mitchell Smith.
But Warnbro rallied with the bat in hand, led by 70 runs from in-form opener Ben Doudle.
Charl Nieuwenhuis joined the party with 55 while Mitchell Cowan notched his own half century with 51.
But their stunning form with the blade was not enough to secure the Swans their first win, as they fell just six runs shy of Waroona’s total with a score of 7/231 from their 50 overs.
Singleton Irwinians defeat White Knights Baldivis
Superb bowling from Singleton’s entire attack saw them remain undefeated with a win over the White Knights on Saturday.
Four wickets from Chris Loveridge, three from David Morgan, two from Tim Hutchison and one from Joseph Senz rounded out a stunning display for the Irwinians, as they restricted Baldivis to just 92 runs ensuring their total of 8/188 would stand tall to deliver a win.
Batting first, Singleton was buoyed by healthy scores to Mitchell Shellam (48), Hutchison (34), Bryce Evans (39), Senz (27) and Loveridge (23) as they batted out their overs.
The White Knights were not as lucky, being led by tail-ender Luke Gray’s 24 runs as they finished all out on 92.
