Waroona got the early jump to the top of the Peel Cricket Association A-grade table when they fought out a tough win over South Mandurah at Peelwood Turf on Saturday.
Sunny skies shone down on the wicket after a washout postponed round one to a later date just a week earlier, and it was Waroona making the most of the season openers led by a superb half century from reigning champion player Jayden Derosa.
The opening batsmen carved out a knock of 62 runs, helping to steady the ship after fellow opener Ben Wright was dismissed for a duck.
Waroona took to the crease first and were off to a shaky start when they lost Wright, but Derosa was able to help the side settle finding the boundary with regularity.
His 62 built the platform for his side before he was caught out, and a string of healthy totals from the middle saw them edge out 8/217 from their 50 overs.
Brandon Burt (21) and Adam Clancy (22) were strong with the bat, helping the visitors to a hearty total to defend.
Waroona’s 217 came in the face of some brilliant bowling from Matt Hill, who posted 1/18 from 10 overs.
Hill was also dominant with the bat, tallying a game-high 68 runs to help South Mandurah overcome the early loss of opener Joe McConnell.
Hill teamed with Jesse Buck (12) to record a 54-run partnership to haul South Mandurah out of the mud and into a more fancied position.
The middle order withstood the Waroona bowling attack, with contributions coming from Michael Holmes (18), Nicholas Scholl (27), Rod Tregenza (17) and Clinton Hutchinson (32).
But it wasn’t enough for the home team to secure a win in their opening match of the season.
Mitchell Smith led Waroona’s wicket taking with a haul of three coming from his 10-over spell.
