For many years John Tonkin College Education Support Centre has partnered with many local businesses in the Mandurah and surrounding areas for students to complete their Workplace Learning.
Woolworths Centro Mandurah and Hot Klobba are just two of many companies to support the program.
John Tonkin student Zac Lucas has completed his work experience at both of these businesses, and through his good work ethic, willingness to learn, being polite and professional, he has been offered part time work at both businesses.
For the past year Zac has been working in Hot Klobba three days a week and Woolworths one day.
His employers have given him opportunities to learn new tasks and work independently.
He has focused on the employability skills of communication, planning and organising, learning, teamwork, self-management, technology, initiative and enterprise and safety and health.
The collage are grateful to the many employers who volunteer their time to help develop the skills of students with disabilities.
The personal growth and confidence which is gained through the workplace learning programme is invaluable, and gives each student a good grounding for post school options, being employment or further study.
The majority of students at John Tonkin College Education Support Centre participate in the Workplace Learning Programme which runs over two terms.
Students are placed in businesses within the Peel Region, either independently or with support, for one day per week to gain experience in the real world of work and get on-the- job training.
Their TAFE courses in Retail, Hospitality or Construction allow them to put into practice the skills learnt.
The collage is always looking for new businesses to be a workplace learning provider and the co-ordinators would appreciate a call from anyone who would like to support the school.
